Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine Problems? What To Do!

Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine Problems? What To Do!

Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine Problems? What To Do?

We know you love your Harley Davidson motorcycle. I mean, who doesn’t? The unique style of customization and that sense of confidence you get whenever you’re driving one is something we all need once in a while. But, as loyal followers of the brand, you must be aware that there is one central issue or problem surrounding the Harley Davidson, – and it is in their Twin Cam Engines.

You might ask yourself, ‘what is it in their Twin Cam engines that make it a potential major issue?’ Before answering that question – and giving you a helpful solution, let us clarify that we are not here to bash the Harley Davidson, neither to put it in a dark place. We are here to educate you, and to give you a little insight on what to expect on your first Harley Davidson motorcycle. Because yes, even the greatest and an iconic brand like the Harley Davidson is not safe from mistakes and certain plot holes. So if you are experiencing the same thing, and have Harley Davidson Twin Cam engine problems, then read on, and be informed!

Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine Problems

Once again, we know how much you adore the Twin Cam engine Harley Davidson motorcycles. However, you still need to know and be aware of what exactly are you buying so there would be no surprise expenses once you start driving the motorcycle. There are plenty of defects in the Twin Cam engines. Enough potential issues to actually alarm you and make you think twice before buying one.

The main problem of the Twin Cam engine of the Harley Davidson is probably it’s the design aspect of the cam chain system. The actual design itself is designed poorly. It utilizes plastic shoes “riding” on the cam chains that can and will actually wear out in due time. Even with its brand new hydraulic tensioning system, this problem still exists and is not a lasting fix for the said issue.

Now, what is exactly the problem here? Note that the Twin Cam engine uses plastic shoes on the cam chains. When these shoes rub against each other, it will eventually wear because of the friction and the constant contact between the two rubber shoes. In really extreme cases, sooner or later, there will be metal to metal contact and this interaction causes metal shavings and may (or will) result in dangerous and fatal engine failures.

Is It Really Dangerous If My Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine is Broken?

If this problem is left unfixed and not noticed, there is a chance that the entire engine of the Twin Cam will be destroyed; pistons, cams, even engine cases. It is a really serious engine problem that needs a lot of attention to get fixed.

The scariest part here is that it can fail at 15,000 miles and even the new hydraulic system can fail at 40,000 miles or less. The plastic shoes need replacing every 40,000 miles because of its weak durability.

Another scary part here is that even the new engines still have the probability of having the same problem with the older engines. It is important to check the engines first before buying a motorcycle. If it has a cam chain engine, there is a slight chance that it comes with the issues we discussed earlier.

Don’t hope that you will get straight answers from Harley dealers regarding this issue. If you really want to own and drive a Harley Davidson regardless of its twin-cam engine problems, then you got to help your motorcycle yourself. The good thing is that you can do some measures to solve the problems and avoid catastrophic engine problems in the future.

Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine Problems Solution

We do have a solution for your Harley Davidson twin cam engine problems. There are various gear systems you can use to directly combat the issue itself. Some experts suggest that this conversion on Twin Cam engines should be done, so you don’t have to worry and fret all the time and you can trust your engine once again. This gear drive replacement is one durable solution to the Harley Davidson twin cam engine problems.

Another thing that you can do is to invest in better oils for your motorcycle. Better performing oils can truly help in delaying the wearing and the destruction of the engine. Though you are still spending on more expensive oils, this is still a cheaper solution than the gear replacement. But, this does not solve the problem since it only delays its arrival.

Lastly, a fan assisted oil cooler can be used for your Harley Davidson twin cam engine problems. The company provides other products, aside from motorcycles, to aid you in your motorcycle needs. Harley Cooling is an effective way to help your twin cam engine. The oil cooler features a controlled fan that provides a continuous flow of cooling air, thus helping your engines cool down and reduce the wearing of the plastic shoes. This is recommended since it directly tackles the problem head-on.

The Harley Davidson motorcycle is one great brand but it is still not safe from problems and issues. You have to be careful when choosing and be critical in order to get the most from what you bought.

Buying a Brand New Harley Davidson Vs. Buying Used

Buying a Brand New Harley Davidson Vs. Buying Used

Buying a Brand New Harley Davidson Vs. Buying Used

Harley riders know that there is nothing quite like the feeling of that V-Twin growling between your legs. Harley Davidson has developed a cult following for a myriad of reasons, one being that characteristic roar we have all grown to love. After spending over a century refining their bikes, Harley has built a following that reflects the quality they produce.

Buying a new Harley has its ups and downs, and before making a purchase there are a few things you should consider. For many riders, buying a brand new Harley may not be the right move.

Buying A New Harley

Whether you’re a new rider or a seasoned one, buying a bike can be a difficult process. Buying a brand new bike has its pros and cons, and if you’re a new rider, it may be better to get something used. Here are just a few things to consider when buying a new bike:

  • Value You will likely never be able to resell a bike for the same price you paid for it when it was brand new. Bikes, just like cars, depreciate significantly after they have some miles. On average, a bike will depreciate 15-30% the minute you drive it off the lot.
  • Fees Fees Fees There are significant fees and taxes added when buying from a dealership. Take the sticker price and add anywhere from $500-$2000. There can sometimes be more or less depending on your relationship with the dealer and your negotiation skills. Buying pre owned from a private seller will sidestep this whole process.
  • Break-in Period Motorcycles have a break in period that require some extra TLC. This period is typically between 500 and 1000 miles. If you are a new rider, you may not have the skills or experience needed to properly break in a bike. Bikes that are not broken in properly generally get poor gas mileage and will likely incur more regular repair shop visits. They also typically run hotter than normal due to increased internal friction, in which case an UltraCool oil cooler can really help.

While the break-in period is seen as a negative by some, many experienced riders see it as a bonding experience. When you break in a motorcycle you get to know the factory quirks that are unique to every bike that comes off the line. Addressing and fine tuning these quirks can be a very positive experience for someone who knows what that to look for and how to fix them.

  • Warranties When buying a new motorcycle, Harley dealerships typically offer a 2 year powertrain warranty. Used bikes will only have this warranty if they are bought within the warranty period. Harley Davidson also offers a factory rebuild on any of their bikes, new or used, and there is no time restriction on that service. It’s not a free service, but it’s significantly cheaper than buying a new Harley.

Buying a Used Harley

Many riders prefer to buy used bikes. To most riders a pre owned Harley is considered a better investment because of a variety of reasons, some being:

  • Quality The Harley Davidson name carries a certain level of quality that hasn’t changed since its inception. Even pre owned bikes carry this level of quality.
  • Aftermarket Upgrades There are a huge amount of upgrades that are made specifically for Harleys that can enhance your riding experience. Buying a bike from a private owner can give you a head start on those upgrades. Stock bikes may not come with fairings and saddlebags but you can easily find a pre owned one with these upgrades, and more.
  • Durability Harleys are built to last. They are among the most durable machines on the planet. If you can find a pre owned bike that isn’t that old, you will avoid rapid depreciation without sacrificing any reliability.
  • Price As stated above, new motorcycles depreciate very quickly. Buying a lightly used Harley will be significantly cheaper than buying a new one as the first buyer will have already eaten that lost value and paid all those pesky fees.
  • Classics There are countless Harley models that are no longer made brand new. These vintage classics can only be bought used and will carry value on the simple basis that classic models are in high demand. Owners of these bikes generally take very good care of them, so there’s a good chance you will get a great bike.

Whether you decide to buy new or pre-owned, you need to learn how to take care of your baby. If you’re buying used, you want to do significant research before making a purchase. Knowing the history of your bike can help maintain it in the future.

V-Twin engines are known for running very hot, and one way to really make that engine happy is to get an oil cooling system from UltraCool. They are easy to install and will greatly increase the lifetime of your engine. Super heated oil causes many problems that will send you to the repair shop and compromise your safety.

Sierra Nevada’s Best Motorcycle Rides

sierra-nevada-motorcycle-rides

A Weekend Guide to Street Vibrations

With the riding season slowly coming to a close soon, we thought we would put together a list of some of the best rides you can take through the highways of California and Nevada.

Many of these rides we have been on ourselves and although they are only a few hours away from home, they are some of the most scenic and enjoyable rides we have taken.

If you’re looking to put a few more miles on your Harley this month, take a look at this list and don’t forget to take your UltraCool Oil Cooler with you!

Some of Sierra Nevada’s Best Motorcycle Rides include:

Virginia City

Just about 30min from UltraCool Headquarters, historic Virginia City offers an interesting view into the past. You will be able to enjoy amazing 100-mile views across the mountains and high desert; you can tour mansions, mines, museums, and ride the railroads along the exact same lines that passengers took more than a century ago.

If you’re coming up from NV 207 it will take you through the very scenic Carson Valley. Take a left onto Foothill Road and a few miles up is the town of Genoa- one of the oldest towns in Nevada that lays claim to the oldest bar which acts as a very famous watering hole for bikers.

Stay on Foothill Road through Carson City and take a right onto Highway 50 (E towards Dayton) and you will see the turnoff for NV 341 to Virginia City.

Once your there grab a bite to eat at The Palace Saloon and Restaurant or stop in at Red’s Old Fashioned Candies for an old fashioned treat! It’s a step back in time and a trip you won’t soon forget.

Lake Tahoe

One of the best ways to see Lake Tahoe is to ride around it! This is a truly scenic and exciting ride, from Carson City north on Highway 50. The ride features rolling hills that turn into amazing mountain peaks.

Two great places to stop and take a few photos are Camp Richardson and Emerald Bay State Park.

When you get to Incline Village stay on Highway 28 to hit a few great places (Sand Harbor and Zephyr Cove).

The whole loop can take about 3 hours to complete and can be slower on busy weekends, so make sure to plan ahead. It also helps to have an Ultracool Oil Cooler on your Harley to make sure you don’t overheat.

Ebbetts Pass

This is a longer ride but definitely worth it! Ebbetts Pass takes you through forest, mountain, and lake views all in one day!

The ride begins in Reno NV and takes you into Bear Valley CA. It will most likely take you a full day, depending on how many times you stop. It’s about a two hour trip each way, so be sure to plan ahead and check your weather reports!

When you get to Markleeville CA, be sure to stop in at the Cutthroat Saloon. It’s a very well known stop along the way for bikers and offers a great place to stretch your legs.

Or take a trip across the street to see Allen and Callen, who are two young entrepreneurs that own and operate a hot dog stand. They are there every weekend until November (weather permitting).  As you leave Markleeville, the trip really becomes exciting as the road begins to wind and turn, it also passes along Lake Alpine which looks as amazing as it sounds.

These three rides offer you a chance to step away from the busyness of life and in some ways take a step back in time without being more than a few hours away from home.

At UltraCool we know that your bike is an extension of you, and we want to make your riding experience better. From the quality of your oil, to the quality of your ride, we want to be there for you. We hope you get a chance to get out there and ride this weekend and would love to hear about your experience!

Advantages of Using a Motorcycle Oil Cooler

Advantages of Using a Motorcycle Oil Cooler

Advantages of Using a Motorcycle Oil Cooler

Many riders may ask: “What are the advantages of a Motorcycle Oil Cooler?”

Riding a motorcycle is often seen as a very liberating activity. The sense of freedom witnessed in riders is something that encourages many to buy their own motorbike.

Owning a motorbike, however, is a big responsibility.

First of all, it’s one pricey investment that you need to safeguard.

Secondly, it needs to be maintained well so you can take it on road trips that will provide you that liberating experience associated with riding a motorbike.

Thirdly, maintenance and the investments you make toward ensuring a sweet ride every time aren’t cheap.

One such investment that is highly recommended is a motorcycle oil cooler.

The main job of this product is to cool the oil so it doesn’t break down – an absolute necessity, particularly in places where it can get intensely hot.

One great advantage this product provides is that if you like to go on long-distance road trips where climates are different, you don’t have to worry much about overheating.

Sure, it’s designed to cool oil, but it can also contribute to cooling the engine.

Engine overheating during long-distance trips is a common occurrence; the likelihood of this happening diminishes a bit with the help of the oil cooler.

“Many riders have also pointed out that using a motorcycle oil cooler can silence some engine noises, especially at higher ambient temperatures.”

It’s not the only thing that can do that, though, but it does have some contribution in reducing the pinging noise that riders are greatly concerned about.

All in all, it’s a crucial investment for riders.

A Motorcycle Oil Cooler performs its specific function well and contributes to the other vital aspects of motorcycle rides.

So, if you like to take your motorbike on long-distance road trips, or you frequently use it to just go anywhere you wish, then you better purchase a premium oil cooler kit. You may do so online and find a dealer in your location.

Make sure to throw in a thermostat as well to complete the system; the thermostat will ensure that the oil is always in normal operating temperatures and that contaminants are prevented from affecting the engine.

The premium oil cooler kit makes installation a breeze; in no time, you’ll have the oil cooler doing its primary job of creating smooth and enjoyable motorcycle rides for you.

If you need a bit more help with installation, there are installation guides online that you can follow so you can get the task done on your own.

Essential Winter Motorcycle Accessories

Essential Winter Motorcycle Accessories

Essential Winter Motorcycle Accessories

When the cold weather begins to set in, some motorcycle owners winterize their rides and wait until the weather becomes warmer before they venture out. But for adventurous motorcycle owners, who make the necessary preparations with Winter Motorcycle Accessories, a winter motorcycle ride can be rewarding and exhilarating.

“The cold weather is no excuse to stop riding.”

But whether you are riding during the summer or winter, it cannot be overstated that your comfort and safety are of paramount importance.

Come winter time, there are two important tasks that you need to do:

Use the right winter motorcycle accessories and prep your bike.

One key mistake that new motorcycle riders make is to put on layers and layers of clothing with the end goal of keeping themselves warm.

While that is not entirely a bad thing, donning unnecessary layers of clothing can only inhibit your movement which, in turn, can compromise your safety on the road.

What you need to do is to find a good balance between warmth, comfort and mobility.

In order to achieve that, you need to layer your clothes smartly.

The first or outer layer will serve as your primary defense against the elements. For this, you will need a jacket that is both waterproof and windproof which will protect you from moisture and prevent heat loss.

Consider investing in a jacket with zippered armpit vents that provide ventilation.

The next layer should provide you with insulation.

In some cases, winter jackets with inner thermal layers will suffice. However, if you are going to ride in extreme temperature, this type of jacket will not be enough.

For this, you will need a heated vest for your torso and heated gloves for your hands.

The final or base layer is the layer of clothing that is closest to your body.

Some riders prefer wearing wool which provides adequate warmth. However, there are several new products out there made out of synthetic materials which can do the same job just as well as, if not better than, wool.

Once you have dealt with your body, it is now time to turn your attention to your other body parts: your hands, legs, and head.

For your hands, you can opt for winter gloves that are waterproof. If this is not enough, you can use glove liners or heated gloves.

For your feet, consider investing in quality winter riding socks which keep warmth in while also keeping moisture away. Some riders swear by the benefits of heated insoles.

For winter riding, a full-face helmet is essential.

However, this type of helmet will not be enough to keep your head warm. For that, you can use an open balaclava supplemented by a scarf.

And now for your ride.

For winter rides, the best investment that you can make is to buy and install windshields, if you do not already have one. Of course, that will depend on the type of bike that you own.

Quite simply, a windshield greatly reduces that amount of wind that you will need to contend with. Other welcome upgrades for winter include hand-guards and heated grips.

So prepare your bike with these Winter Motorcycle Accessories and make sure your bike is ready to go in spring with a new oil cooler to save your bike from overheating!

Top 9 Harley-Davidson Winter Storage Tips

Top 9 Harley-Davidson Winter Storage Tips

Top 9 Harley-Davidson Winter Storage Tips

Prep for winter with our Top 9 Harley-Davidson Winter Storage tips. Although it is possible to mitigate some of the risks associated with motorcycle riding during the winter or even boost your comfort during a cool season ride, many Harley-Davidson owners prefer to swap their bikes for their cars until the temperature becomes more conducive for motorcycle riding.

Here’s how you can properly winterize your motorcycle, ensuring that it is stored correctly and ready for spring.

Harley-Davidson winter storage will require you to address a few key points.

“How you store your motorcycle over the winter will depend on its type. But no matter what type of bike you own, your main concern would be moisture.”

1. Clean your bike

It may seem counter-intuitive considering the fact that nobody will see your bike for months. However, giving your ride a thorough cleaning before storage helps prevent the corrosion of its finish due to water spots and debris.

Wash your bike and allow it to dry completely. You can use an electric leaf blower especially in hard-to-reach areas. Once dry, apply a coat of wax which will act as an added layer of protection against rust and moisture.

Spray WD-40 on all exposed metal parts.

2. Give your bike fresh oil and filter

Replacing the oil of your motorcycle eliminates the need to change oil and allows you to start it with greater ease come riding season. Experts recommend using an oil with winter weight.

If you are going to store your bike for a full season or longer, you will also need to apply a thin coat of oil on the engine to protect it against moisture. Otherwise, moisture can cause the formation of rust in the pistons and cylinder walls.

3. Pay attention to moving parts

Another way to protect your ride from moisture is to lube all moving parts. This helps protect against binding as well as rusting.

4. Fill up the gas tank

Gas tanks can rust when bikes are not used for a long time. Additionally, the gas left in the tank can turn gummy. In order to prevent this, fill up the tank with fuel added with a stabilizer. Filling up the fuel tank leaves no room for extra moisture.

UltraCool offers our Top 9 Harley Winter Storage Tips

5. Use a smart tender for the battery

Some experts recommend unhooking the battery. However, you can use a battery tender which monitors the charge of the battery and keeps it topped off while preventing overcharging. Before installing a battery tender, make sure that you clean the electrodes and apply a thin coat of grease.

6. Keep the tires off the ground

Leaving the tires in the same position for an extended period of time can lead to flat spots. You can prevent this by investing in motorcycle stands. Alternatively, you can simply roll the tires every few weeks. If you opt for the latter, make sure that you put plywood or carpet underneath the tires to prevent moisture from seeping into the tires.

7. Put enough anti-freeze in your bike’s coolant system

If you live in an area where the temperature gets really cold, consider adding anti-freeze to your bike’s coolant system. This will prevent a cracked head.

8. Keep pests at bay

Small animals seeking shelter from the cold can wind up inside your bike air filters and exhaust pipes. Prevent that by plugging the exhaust pipe using a muffler plug or even plastic bags.

9. Cover your bike

A motorcycle cover protects your bike against dust and moisture. If you are going to store your bike outdoors, make sure that the cover is secured properly to prevent it from getting blown off. You can buy our Reefer Cold Weather Cover by clicking here or our Softail Cold Weather Cover by clicking here.

So prepare your bike with these Harley-Davidson Winter Storage Tips and make sure your bike is ready to go in spring with a new oil cooler to save your bike from overheating!

Buying Replacement Motorcycle Parts

Buying Replacement Motorcycle Parts

Buying Replacement Motorcycle Parts

Motorcycle Parts – Having a two-wheel ride can be a huge advantage, particularly if you tend to travel through highly congested areas every day. A motorcycle can easily fit in tight lanes and narrow roads. Likewise, it’s so much easier to pack on speed using a motorcycle so you can get to your destination much faster.

If you rely heavily on your motorcycle for your daily commute or for leisurely travel, it’s crucial to know reliable vendors of replacement motorcycle parts; this way, should this means of transportation break down, you can quickly restore it to its proper working condition.

But where can these Motorcycle Parts vendors be found?

One of your options is to turn to your dealer. Say, you own a Harley-Davidson; it is highly likely that the dealership where you got your bike has accessories, replacement parts and other supplies for the bikes it sells. Often, dealerships even have their own service centers with technicians who can install the parts that you need replaced and even perform a motorcycle tune-up.

And perhaps, the best advantage that you can score from a dealership is the certainty that you’re getting all original parts that are completely compatible with your bike.

Your next best option, especially if you’re looking for good Motorcycle Parts deals, is to go online.

Now, you need to be very discriminating when you take your search to the online realm because it’s abundant with knock-offs and bogus sellers. When you shop online, it’s important to look for genuine customer feedback and reviews to find out which vendors can be trusted and can provide you the best value for your money.

You may also purchase from individual sellers. There are many of them that you can find online, along with classified ads. The advantage with individual sellers is you can haggle with them. Now, the downside of buying from sellers is that it can be difficult to establish their credibility and you cannot expect additional services.

Some are merely selling what they have; you cannot expect clear instructions on installation and even full details about the parts. It is also worth pointing out that it is often time-consuming to deal with individual sellers; you’re likely to meet with one after another to effectively compare parts.

“Out of the three options, it’s definitely smartest to get your motorcycle parts from trusted vendors and dealerships.”

You can be certain about the quality and you may even get additional services to help with the installation of replacement motorcycle parts, as well as other things you may need to properly restore the function of your motorcycle.

So after replacing your Motorcycle Parts, get out and start riding your bike today along with a new oil cooler to save your bike from overheating!

Riding Safety Tips for Newbies

Riding Safety Tips for Newbies

Riding Safety Tips for Newbies

Riding Safety – If you ask people why they prefer to ride motorcycles, you will get a long list of answers. However, it is undeniable that one of the things that make motorcycle riding appealing to a broad number of people is the connection between man and machine that driving a car cannot offer.

But the thing that makes motorcycle riding enticing can also be the same thing that makes it risky. Whether you are a newbie or a seasoned motorcycle rider, one of the important things that you need to know is that your bike is less stable and less visible on the road compared to a car.

“Additionally, motorcycles do not have the same amount of protection offered by an enclosed vehicle.”

If you are planning on investing in a bike, whether for practical reasons, for leisure, or a combination of both, here are a few motorcycle safety basics that you will need to learn and master.

Riding Safety to always keep in mind:

Choose the right bike

One riding safety measure that is especially applicable to prospective riders is choosing the right motorcycle. Ideally, the bike you choose should allow you to mount and dismount with little effort. Check for the fit. The handlebars and the controls should be easy for you to reach. Do not buy a bike that is too heavy for you. In terms of engines, choose a bike with a 250 to 300 cc engine if you are planning to use it for your daily commute, or a bike with a 500 to 750 cc engine if you want to use your motorcycle on a highway.

Upgrade to ABS brakes

If your bike does not come with ABS or antilock brakes, consider making the switch. This type of brake prevents lock-ups which lead to loss of steering control. In turn, the loss of steering control can lead to crashes, skids and injuries.

Invest in honing your riding safety skills

Investing some time and money toward a basic motorcycle safety course can sometimes spell the difference between life and death. Most of these courses cover the basics of motorcycle riding while others offer tips on how to handle emergency situations. Apart from boosting your safety, you can even get a discount for your insurance.

Wear a helmet

Wearing a helmet can substantially reduce the risk of succumbing to a fatal head injury by as much as 40 percent. Additionally, riders who wear helmets are three times less likely to suffer from brain injuries should they figure in an accident. Experts recommend full-face helmets approved by the Department of Transportation. Remember to buy a new helmet every five years or if you figure in a motorcycle crash.

Invest in the right wardrobe

Whether you are going for a short or long ride, you should wear the right type of clothing. These include a reinforced jacket, over the ankle footwear, full pants, and gloves. Avoid wearing T-shirts, sandals and jeans.

Be alert

In most accidents involving cars and motorcycles, it is the car driver who is at fault. As such, you have to be extra careful and defensive. Be always on the lookout for cars and avoid tailgating. Keep your bike at a safe distance, giving you enough space and time to react.

Don’t ride when the weather is bad

Unless you really have to, avoid riding out when the weather is bad. Apart from making the roads slippery, rain can cut down visibility. If you must ride when it is raining, avoid making sudden movements and be gentle on the brakes, throttle and steering.

Be watchful

Motorcycles are more susceptible to road hazards because of the reduced contact with the road. Always watch out for bumps, potholes, sand, pebbles and wet leaves which can lead to skids.

Check your bike before each ride

Make it a habit to do a quick but thorough check on your bike, especially the brakes, chain, belt, shaft, signals, lights and horn.

So after following these riding safety tips, get out and start riding your bike today along with a new oil cooler to save your bike from overheating!

Scenic Bike Routes For Summer

Scenic Bike Routes For Summer

Scenic Bike Routes For Summer

In an ideal world, you would have all the time to explore and see the scenic bike routes you have always been dreaming of getting to. But unless you are a retiree or have a business that runs by itself, there is one crucial restraint that you should consider: time.

“When you are eyeing motorcycle routes you have not yet explored, ample planning can go a long way.”

Here’s how you can make the most out of the long scenic bike routes you are planning.

Let your interests guide you

During the initial stages of planning, it is a good idea to start with specific areas of interest that you wish to go to. From there, you can plan your route accordingly.

Determine how long you need to ride

For longer rides, you may want to pace yourself accordingly by calculating how many hours or miles you will need to cover in order to arrive at your chosen destination/s within a given time frame. Take into account breaks for rest and eating and even unexpected detours.

Consider renting a bike

If you are planning a considerably long ride and you do not want to subject your precious ride to too much wear on the road, you might want to consider renting a motorcycle. Alternatively, you can have your motorcycle shipped and delivered to a particular location on your route and ride from there.

Know thyself

In choosing which routes to take, take into account the terrain as well as your riding skill and experience. If you go out of your depth, you may prolong your ride — or worse, compromise your safety.

Timing is key

Determine what the weather is like in your chosen destinations during the time you intend to visit and then make the necessary adjustments of revisions. Broadly speaking, the best time to take long rides is between May and September. The weather is pleasant and most attractions are open.

Schedule some downtime

Things can happen unexpectedly: bad weather, bike breaks down, etc. By setting an allowance for downtime, you can keep pace with your schedule. And even if things go according to your initial plan, you can use your downtime to explore some places more.

Create a budget

An otherwise pleasant trip can be ruined by lack of funds. Remember, you are going to spend money not only on gas. Your budget should also cover a lot of the basics (meals, accommodations, entrance fees) as well as incidentals like repairs. If you think you are going to be short on cash, consider taking a shorter trip.
